Why did you move to Sweden?

I basically work for IBM Egypt and I am currently on an assignment for a project in Sweden. It is better for the whole team to work from the same place so I moved to Sweden to be able to work with the team.

When did you move to Sweden?

I moved to Sweden in March 2016.

What do you wish you knew about Sweden, when you first moved here?

Personal number is something that is very important to have in Sweden specially if you got sick and went to the hospital to get medical care.

How would you compare the Swedish work culture to your home country’s work culture?

In Sweden, there is work-life balance and work mates respects your personal space. Also, lunch time is very appreciated in Sweden and It helps work mates to spend some time together away from work.

What’s your favourite part about living in Sweden?

Sweden (especially Helsingborg) is very calm. People there are very helpful and it is easy to communicate with others in English, so for me it was not a problem that I can’t speak Swedish. Also summer in Sweden is something special, people are more outgoing and it is sunny almost all day.

What do you struggle with the most in Sweden?

There is nothing that i can think of now aside from waiting for very long time to get decision about my work permit extension.

Did you fill in the form for the work permit extension application yourself?

No, I got help from a third party company who did that for us.

When did you apply for your work permit extension and what’s the current state?

My application extension was submitted on 31 July 2017 am currently waiting for a decision from the migration agency, I applied for the first permit in January 2016 and got the decision after 3 weeks. Then in the next extension It took the migration agency almost 6 months to get the decision.

Any tips for people doing the work permit extension application?

  1. You should make sure that you file your extension before the end of your current permit, otherwise you will have to return to your country until you get a decision from the migration agency about your extension.
  2. You should make sure that all the required documents are submitted with your application, because if there is something missing this will increase the waiting time to get a decision.
  3. Try to have back to back work permits and not to have gaps in between, because this will help a lot in getting a Swedish personal number.
